DIVYA DELHI : US President Donald Trump said on Monday he will participate “indirectly” in upcoming talks with Iran over its nuclear programme, set to begin on Tuesday in Geneva. Trump expressed optimism, suggesting Iran is motivated to reach a deal. Tensions are high as the US has deployed a second aircraft carrier to the Middle East and is preparing for the possibility of a sustained military campaign if negotiations fail. Trump referenced last summer’s US strikes on Iranian nuclear sites, warning Tehran of the consequences of a hardened stance. Meanwhile, Iran’s civil defense organisation conducted a chemical defense drill at the Pars Special Economic Energy Zone to strengthen preparedness for potential incidents at the energy hub. The talks resume after earlier negotiations stalled over Iran’s nuclear enrichment activities, a key point of contention with the US.
