The initiative is part of the Delhi government’s broader heat action plan announced by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta. Along with schools, water ATMs will also be set up at bus queue shelters and other public places to provide safe and clean drinking water to residents and passersby.Officials said the move aims to reduce dependence on tanker water while ensuring continuous access to potable water. Each unit will have four to six taps and feature advanced systems such as GPS tracking, remote monitoring, auto-flushing, and self-regulation to minimise manual intervention. The water supplied will undergo four stages of filtration to maintain quality standards. Authorities have set a target of completing the installation within three months. In addition, the Directorate of Education has issued guidelines for schools to tackle the heat. Institutions have been directed to ring bells every 45 to 60 minutes to remind students to stay hydrated and adopt a “buddy system” to monitor each other’s well-being.The measures follow warnings from the India Meteorological Department about an impending heatwave. Schools have also been advised to keep ORS solutions readily available as a precautionary step.
