Divya Delhi :
The Supreme Court on Friday refused to vacate its stay on the Telangana High Court’s order granting transit anticipatory bail to Congress leader Pawan Khera, leaving him vulnerable to arrest in a case filed by Assam Police.A bench comprising Justices JK Maheshwari and Atul S Chandurkar, however, granted Khera the liberty to immediately approach the Guwahati High Court for anticipatory bail. The court directed that his plea be decided strictly on its merits, without being influenced by ongoing proceedings. The apex court also declined to grant interim protection from arrest until next week. During the hearing, senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi, appearing for Khera, informed the bench that a bail application would be filed on Monday. The case stems from remarks made by Khera during an April 4 press conference, where he accused Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and his wife, Riniki Bhuyan Sharma, of alleged involvement in illegal activities, including claims about multiple passports and undisclosed foreign properties.Earlier, the Telangana High Court had granted Khera one-week transit bail to seek relief in Assam. However, the Assam Police challenged this order in the Supreme Court, leading to the current legal setback for the Congress leader.
