South Korea, US and Nine Other Nations Issue Joint Alert on North Korean IT Workers

Divya Delhi : South Korea, the United States and nine other countries have jointly issued a cybersecurity advisory warning businesses and organisations about North Korean information technology (IT) workers who use false identities to secure remote jobs abroad. The countries said the workers generate revenue for the North Korean regime, potentially helping fund its weapons and missile programmes. The joint alert urged companies to strengthen hiring verification procedures, conduct thorough background checks and monitor remote work arrangements to prevent infiltration by individuals linked to North Korea. Authorities warned that such workers often disguise their identities, use forged documents and operate through third-party intermediaries to gain employment. The participating countries emphasized that the scheme poses risks not only to international sanctions enforcement but also to corporate cybersecurity and the protection of sensitive data. They called for greater international cooperation and information-sharing to counter the growing threat. The advisory reflects increasing global efforts to disrupt North Korea’s overseas revenue-generating activities and protect businesses from cyber-related security risks
