MCD issues guidelines for schools to deal with rising temperature

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi has issued comprehensive guidelines for schools to tackle rising temperatures and a possible heatwave in the national capital, prioritising student safety and health.MCD Education Committee chairman Yogesh Verma said the directions apply to all corporation-run and affiliated schools. The move comes in response to warnings by the India Meteorological Department about increasing heat conditions in Delhi.Under the new measures, schools have been instructed to avoid outdoor assemblies and instead hold them in shaded or indoor areas. Conducting classes in open spaces has also been prohibited. To prevent dehydration, a “water bell” system will be implemented, encouraging students to drink water every 45 to 60 minutes.Additionally, schools must adopt a “buddy system” where students monitor each other’s well-being. Outdoor sports activities have been restricted, and institutions have been directed to organise awareness sessions on heatwave safety, including recognising symptoms and ensuring adequate hydration.Officials said immediate first aid and medical support must be available when required. The MCD, which operates over 1,500 primary schools catering to more than 8 lakh students, has also advised parents to dress children in light, cotton clothing and maintain proper hygiene. Each school will appoint a nodal officer to ensure effective implementation and regular communication of these guidelines.
