Justice Yashwant Varma has resigned from his position at the Allahabad High Court amid an ongoing impeachment process over corruption allegations linked to a major cash recovery case. His resignation was submitted to President Droupadi Murmu on April 9. In his resignation letter, Justice Varma did not specify reasons for stepping down, stating only that he was doing so with “deep anguish.” Sources in the Lok Sabha Secretariat indicated that his resignation effectively brings the impeachment proceedings to an end. Had he been formally removed by Parliament, he would have lost post-retirement benefits, including pension, which he will now retain. The controversy stems from the alleged recovery of a large stash of cash from his official residence in Delhi on March 14, 2025, when he was serving as a judge of the Delhi High Court. The cash was reportedly found in a storeroom near the servants’ quarters. Justice Varma has consistently denied ownership of the money, asserting that the area was accessible to multiple individuals. Following the incident, the Supreme Court of India constituted a three-judge committee to conduct an in-house inquiry. The case later escalated, leading to impeachment proceedings initiated in Parliament. Justice Varma had also been transferred back to the Allahabad High Court and relieved of judicial duties pending the investigation.
