The recent online leak of the Vijay-starrer Jana Nayagan has triggered fresh concerns over film piracy, even as authorities and producers move swiftly to contain the damage. The film reportedly surfaced in high-definition on torrent platforms, dealing a major blow to its producers ahead of release. Production house KVN Productions, which has invested heavily in the film’s production and marketing, is now grappling with potential financial losses. The company has partnered with Erode-based anti-piracy firm WarX to track the source of the leak and curb its spread. WarX CEO Raamesh S. stated that the firm is actively preserving peer-to-peer torrent traffic logs to identify those involved in the illegal distribution. Efforts are also underway to remove pirated copies from various online platforms. The incident has also brought attention to stricter anti-piracy provisions under the Cinematograph Act, 1952. Amendments introduced in 2023 prescribe stringent penalties, including imprisonment of up to three years and fines that may extend to 5% of a film’s audited production cost. Industry experts believe the case could serve as a test for enforcement of these new legal provisions, sending a strong message against digital piracy and safeguarding the interests of filmmakers in an increasingly digital distribution landscape.
