Extreme Heat Sweeps Europe, Putting Air Conditioning at the Heart of Survival Debate

divya delhi : Europe is facing another summer of extreme heat, with repeated heatwaves pushing temperatures to dangerous levels and placing growing pressure on public health, infrastructure and everyday life. In countries including France, the United Kingdom, Spain, Italy and Greece, prolonged periods of intense heat have been accompanied by wildfires, drought and rising health risks. The worsening conditions are also reigniting a debate over air conditioning and access to cooling. Once considered largely a luxury in many European countries, air conditioning is increasingly being viewed as an important tool for protecting vulnerable people from dangerous indoor temperatures. A recent scientific assessment noted that AC ownership remains relatively low in Europe, at around 20%, although demand is rising rapidly during heatwaves. The UK is already seeing a sharp change in attitudes, with searches for homes equipped with air conditioning more than doubling compared with last year. Experts warn that a large share of British homes could face overheating as temperatures continue to rise. However, expanding air conditioning comes with its own challenges. Greater electricity demand could put additional pressure on power grids, while cooling powered by carbon-intensive energy could contribute to further warming. Experts therefore argue that Europe needs a broader adaptation strategy combining efficient cooling systems with better-insulated buildings, shading, ventilation, greener urban planning and heat-resilient infrastructure. The debate is increasingly shifting from whether Europe should use air conditioning to who can access safe cooling, how it can be powered sustainably, and how quickly homes and cities can adapt to a hotter climate.
