Divya Delhi: The Centre has issued a draft notification proposing amendments to the **Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989** to update fuel classifications and accelerate the adoption of cleaner energy sources, including biofuels and hydrogen.

According to the draft, the government aims to align vehicle emission and type-approval standards with higher ethanol blending targets under the ongoing E20 rollout. One of the key proposals includes revising hydrogen fuel classification from Hydrogen + CN to Hydrogen + CNG, reflecting evolving fuel technologies and infrastructure. The notification also proposes increasing the gross vehicle weight threshold from 3,000 kg to 3,500 kg for certain vehicle categories, which is expected to benefit manufacturers adapting to new fuel standards. In addition, biodiesel classifications are set to be upgraded from B10 to B100, signaling a stronger push toward full biodiesel utilisation. To ensure uniformity, the draft also seeks to standardise emission testing parameters and technical notations across vehicle categories. These changes are intended to simplify compliance procedures while maintaining environmental safeguards. The move is part of the government’s broader strategy to reduce dependence on fossil fuels, cut vehicular emissions, and promote sustainable mobility solutions. Stakeholders, including automobile manufacturers and industry bodies, have been invited to submit their feedback on the proposed amendments before final implementation.Experts believe the revised rules could play a crucial role in advancing India’s transition toward cleaner and more efficient transport systems.
