Breast Cancer Biomarkers Advance, Bringing New Hope for Personalized Treatment

DIVYA DELHI : Advances in biomarker research are transforming breast cancer management by helping clinicians assess disease prognosis, predict treatment responses, and develop more personalized therapeutic strategies. Breast cancer biomarkers are increasingly important in guiding clinical decisions, enabling healthcare professionals to identify patients who may benefit from specific treatments. Established biomarkers, including estrogen receptor (ER), progesterone receptor (PR), and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2), play a crucial role in determining appropriate treatment approaches. Recent developments in genomic profiling have further expanded the role of biomarkers in evaluating recurrence risk and supporting treatment selection. Multigene assays, such as Oncotype DX and MammaPrint, can help guide chemotherapy decisions in selected patients with early-stage breast cancer. Meanwhile, emerging technologies, including liquid biopsies and circulating tumor DNA analysis, are being investigated for their potential to monitor treatment response, detect molecular changes, and identify signs of disease recurrence. Researchers are also exploring novel biomarkers that could help predict drug resistance and improve therapeutic outcomes. Although challenges remain in validating emerging biomarkers and ensuring their accessibility, continued research is advancing precision oncology. These developments offer promising opportunities to optimize treatment strategies, minimize unnecessary interventions, and improve personalized care for patients with breast cancer.
