Samrat Choudhary was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Bihar on Wednesday, becoming the first leader from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to hold the top post in the state. The oath of office and secrecy was administered by Governor Syed Ata Hasnain at a ceremony attended by senior leaders of the ruling National Democratic Alliance Prominent figures present included Union Ministers J P Nadda and Chirag Paswan, along with former Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and legislators from NDA constituents such as the Janata Dal (United). The leadership change follows Nitish Kumar’s resignation on Tuesday, when he stepped down from the Chief Minister’s post and dissolved his cabinet. Kumar, who has now moved to the Rajya Sabha, previously headed a coalition government in which Choudhary served as Deputy Chief Minister and held the influential Home portfolio. Choudhary, who joined the BJP in 2017, was elected leader of the BJP legislative party a day before the swearing-in. The decision was taken in the presence of senior party leaders, including central observer Shivraj Singh Chouhan. His appointment marks a significant political shift in Bihar, with the BJP taking direct leadership of the state government under the alliance for the first time.
