Loud Calls and Music on Trains Could Lead to ₹1,000 Fine or Jail

DIVYA DELHI : Passengers travelling by train may need to be more mindful of their behaviour, particularly when using mobile phones or playing music at high volume. Railway rules aimed at maintaining a peaceful environment on board prohibit passengers from creating disturbances that inconvenience fellow travellers. Under the applicable railway provisions, passengers who create excessive noise through loud phone conversations, music, videos or other activities can face action if their behaviour causes a disturbance. Depending on the circumstances and the provisions invoked, violations may result in a fine of up to ₹1,000 and, in certain cases, imprisonment. The rules are intended to ensure that passengers can rest comfortably during their journey, especially on overnight and long-distance trains. Complaints about passengers speaking loudly on phones, playing music without headphones and disturbing others have become a recurring issue during train journeys. Railway staff can intervene when a complaint is received or when disruptive behaviour is noticed. Passengers are generally advised to use headphones at an appropriate volume, keep phone conversations brief and avoid activities that disturb people seated or sleeping nearby. The issue has also renewed discussion about passenger etiquette and responsible use of public transport. While mobile phones and entertainment devices are an integral part of modern travel, authorities emphasise that individual convenience should not come at the expense of other passengers’ comfort. Travellers are therefore being urged to follow railway rules and maintain reasonable noise levels throughout their journey to avoid complaints or possible legal action.
