DIVYA DELHI : The killing of Mexican drug lord Nemesio Ruben Oseguera Cervantes, alias “El Mencho,” chief of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), has sparked coordinated violence across Mexico and prompted advisories from India, the US and Canada. Indian agencies view the development as a strategic relief. El Mencho’s name had surfaced after the Indian Coast Guard seized 6,000 kg of methamphetamine worth ₹6,000 crore from a trawler near the Andaman and Nicobar Islands on November 25, 2024. The consignment was suspected to be linked to CJNG in coordination with a Chinese syndicate led by Tse Chi Lop. Officials said the bust exposed a Mexico–China drug nexus using Indian waters to route high-grade methamphetamine to Southeast Asia. El Mencho’s death is expected to temporarily weaken the cartel’s footprint in the Asia-Pacific region and boost India’s anti-narcotics efforts, including actions against networks linked to Dawood Ibrahim.
