Divya Delhi : *Visakhapatnam In a bid to promote rehabilitation and reduce repeat offences, Visakhapatnam Central Jail is equipping inmates with vocational and life skills to help them build a better future after their release. The initiative focuses on providing prisoners with practical training in various trades, including tailoring, carpentry, handicrafts, agriculture, food processing and other employment-oriented skills. Alongside vocational education, inmates are also being offered counselling, literacy programmes and personality development sessions. The rehabilitation programme is being implemented by the prison administration with support from government departments and partner organisations. The objective is to prepare inmates for successful reintegration into society by improving their employability and encouraging self-reliance. Officials said the initiative aims to transform correctional facilities into centres of reform, enabling prisoners to lead productive and law-abiding lives after completing their sentences. The programme also seeks to reduce recidivism by providing inmates with opportunities to earn a livelihood through legal means. The effort reflects a shift in the correctional system’s approach from punishment to rehabilitation, emphasising that skill development and education can play a vital role in helping former inmates rebuild their lives and contribute positively to society.
