US Targets Iran’s Hormuz ‘Extortion’ Network with Fresh Sanctions

Divya Delhi : The United States has announced fresh sanctions targeting what it describes as Iran’s “Hormuz extortion” network, accusing Tehran of using threats and coercive tactics around the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz to generate revenue and undermine regional stability. The measures are aimed at disrupting financial and logistical networks allegedly linked to Iran’s activities in the region. According to the US administration, the sanctions target individuals, companies, and entities believed to be involved in facilitating Iran’s maritime operations and sanctions evasion. Washington said the move is part of its broader strategy to safeguard international shipping routes and maintain freedom of navigation through one of the world’s busiest oil transit corridors. Iran has consistently rejected similar allegations in the past, maintaining that its actions in the Gulf are intended to ensure regional security. The latest sanctions are expected to add to tensions between Washington and Tehran amid ongoing disagreements over regional security and Iran’s nuclear programme.
