DIVYA DELHI : Washington, D.C, Feb 12 — The US House of Representatives approved a Democratic-led resolution rejecting former President Donald Trump’s tariffs on Canadian goods, in a rare bipartisan rebuke of his trade policy. The measure passed 219–211, with six Republicans joining Democrats. However, the vote is largely symbolic. Any effort to overturn the tariffs would require approval from the Senate and Trump’s signature — and would likely face a presidential veto that Congress is unlikely to override. Trump issued a last-minute warning to fellow Republicans, saying those who opposed the tariffs would face “serious” electoral consequences. Supporters argue the duties strengthen economic and national security, while critics — including some Republicans — say tariffs act as a tax on American consumers. Canada has been affected by multiple rounds of tariffs since Trump returned to office, though many goods remain exempt under the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). The legality of Trump’s use of emergency powers to impose country-specific tariffs is currently under review by the US Supreme Court. Public opinion remains divided, with recent polling showing a majority of Americans oppose higher tariffs.
