Supreme Court Issues Directions to ECI on Transparent Verification Under WB SIR

DIVYA DELHI : The Supreme Court on Monday issued directions to the Election Commission of India to ensure transparent and stress-free verification of voters listed under “logical discrepancies” during the Special Intensive Revision process in West Bengal. The court ordered the ECI to publicly display the list of affected persons at Panchayat and Block offices. It noted that around 1.25 crore notices have been issued over discrepancies such as age gaps and name mismatches. Affected individuals may submit documents or objections through authorised agents, including Booth Level Agents. The court also directed that submission centres be set up locally to avoid long travel, mandated hearings if documents are found unsatisfactory, and required officials to certify receipt of documents. The state government was asked to provide adequate manpower, while the DGP was directed to ensure law and order during the process.
