Not 51°C, But It Feels Like It: Why Delhi’s Heat Is Becoming More Dangerous.

Divya Delhi : Even though Delhi’s actual temperature has not reached 51 degrees Celsius, many residents say it feels just as intense due to soaring humidity and extreme weather conditions. Meteorologists explain that the “feels like” temperature, also known as the heat index, combines air temperature with humidity to measure how hot it feels to the human body. High moisture levels prevent sweat from evaporating efficiently, making it harder for the body to cool itself. This increases the risk of dehydration, heat exhaustion, and heatstroke, particularly among children, senior citizens, and outdoor workers. Experts attribute the severe conditions to delayed monsoon activity, urban heat island effects, and changing climate patterns. Authorities have advised people to stay indoors during peak afternoon hours, drink plenty of water, wear light clothing, and avoid prolonged exposure to the sun. Health officials continue to monitor the situation as Delhi experiences one of its most uncomfortable heat spells this season.
