Modi Government Steps Up Efforts to Build Support for Women’s Reservation Bill

Divya Delhi : The Narendra Modi-led Union government has intensified efforts to secure broader political backing for the Women’s Reservation Bill by reaching out to parties that previously abstained from supporting the legislation. As part of its strategy, the government has engaged with opposition parties, including the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar) (NCP-SP), to address their concerns and seek their cooperation. The Bill proposes reserving 33% of seats in the Lok Sabha and State Legislative Assemblies for women, aiming to increase women’s representation in politics. The outreach reflects the government’s attempt to build consensus and reduce political differences before moving ahead with the legislation. Political observers say the initiative could play a key role in determining the Bill’s future implementation.
