Delhi Under GRAP-1: Know the New Restrictions and Their Impact on Your Health

DIVYA DELHI : Delhi-NCR has come under Stage-I of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) after the capital’s air quality entered the “poor” category. The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) invoked GRAP-1 across the entire NCR on October 21, following a rise in Delhi’s AQI to 244. GRAP-1 focuses on preventing pollution levels from deteriorating further. Authorities have been directed to intensify road sweeping and water sprinkling, strengthen dust-control measures at construction sites, increase the use of anti-smog guns and prevent open burning of waste and biomass. Pollution checks on vehicles and industries will also be intensified. For residents, the restrictions and advisories also mean avoiding unnecessary vehicle use, preferring public transport or carpooling and ensuring vehicles have valid Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificates. The use of diesel generator sets is also regulated, while public transport services are being strengthened. Health experts warn that poor air quality can particularly affect children, older adults and people with existing respiratory problems. Fine particulate matter such as PM2.5 can penetrate deep into the lungs, potentially worsening breathing difficulties and other health conditions. Residents are advised to monitor AQI levels, limit strenuous outdoor activity when pollution is high and reduce exposure to polluted air.
