Divya Delhi : The Delhi High Court on Thursday dismissed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) that sought the registration of an FIR against Delhi Police over the alleged forceful removal of climate activist Sonam Wangchuk and his supporters from the Jantar Mantar protest site. The court observed that the petitioner had alternative legal remedies available and declined to entertain the plea. The PIL alleged that Sonam Wangchuk and several protesters were forcibly removed while holding a peaceful demonstration at Jantar Mantar. The petitioner requested the court to direct the police to register an FIR and investigate the incident. However, the High Court ruled that such relief could not be granted through a PIL and advised the petitioner to pursue the appropriate legal process under the law. The case stems from the recent protest led by Wangchuk, who has been demanding constitutional safeguards and greater protection for Ladakh’s environment and cultural identity. The dismissal of the PIL does not determine whether the allegations are true but only states that the matter should be addressed through the proper legal channels.
