The upcoming historical drama *As Deep as the Grave* has drawn attention for using generative AI to recreate late Hollywood actor Val Kilmer on screen. Kilmer, who passed away last year after battling throat cancer, was originally cast as Father Finton, a Catholic priest and Native American spiritualist. However, due to his deteriorating health, he was unable to film his scenes. To complete the project, filmmakers collaborated with Kilmer’s estate and his daughter Mercedes Kilmer to digitally recreate his performance using advanced AI tools. The film focuses on Ann Axtell Morris, considered one of America’s earliest female archaeologists, and her exploration of the Canyon de Chelly. By combining historical storytelling with cutting-edge technology, the creators aim to preserve Kilmer’s role while maintaining the integrity of the narrative. Kilmer was celebrated for his performances in iconic films such as *Top Gun*, *The Doors*, *Batman Forever*, *Heat* and *Top Gun: Maverick*. The use of AI to recreate deceased actors continues to spark debate within the film industry, raising questions about ethics, consent and the future of digital performances in cinema.
