DIVYA DELHI : India has agreed to eliminate or reduce tariffs on a wide range of US food and agricultural products under a newly announced India–US interim trade framework, a move expected to lower prices for Indian consumers. According to a joint statement released on Saturday, products likely to benefit include dried distillers’ grains (DDGs), red sorghum for animal feed, tree nuts, fresh and processed fruits, soybean oil, and wine and spirits. The tariff cuts are part of reciprocal commitments aimed at easing trade tensions and improving market access. Under the framework, the United States will reduce tariffs on Indian goods from 50% to 18%, reversing higher duties imposed after earlier trade talks stalled. Both countries have also agreed to address non-tariff barriers, set rules of origin, and continue negotiations toward a full bilateral trade agreement. India has additionally indicated plans to purchase $500 billion worth of US energy, aircraft, technology products and raw materials over the next five years.
