DIVYA DELHI : Trump has announced sweeping new tariffs on imported drones and drone components, with duties reaching as high as 100% for products considered particularly sensitive to national security. The move, announced on August 13, is aimed at reducing U.S. dependence on foreign drone technology and encouraging domestic manufacturing. Under the new policy, a 100% tariff will apply to certain drones weighing more than 25 kilograms (55 pounds), as well as models equipped with thermal-imaging capabilities. Their docking stations and specified critical components will also face the highest tariff. Smaller drones without these sensitive features will generally face a 25% tariff. Drones and components from several U.S. allies, including the European Union, Japan, South Korea, Switzerland and Taiwan, will face lower tariffs of around 15%, while imports from the United Kingdom will face a 10% rate under specified conditions. The Trump administration says the measures are intended to strengthen America’s drone supply chain, address national-security risks and boost domestic production. The tariffs are expected to put pressure on importers and could also raise costs for businesses and consumers.
