An Air India pilot operating a Phuket-Delhi flight has reportedly tested positive for marijuana following an incident in which the aircraft suddenly lost around 300 feet of altitude, leaving 24 passengers and crew members injured. The incident occurred on August 4, 2026, and has triggered a detailed aviation safety investigation. According to reports, the pilot, identified as Sudeep Vashistha, told investigators that he slept for approximately 30 to 35 minutes during the flight. He reportedly said that he had been experiencing difficulty sleeping during the layover and was also taking medication related to sleep problems. The pilot subsequently underwent mandatory drug screening, with reports stating that his sample tested positive for marijuana in both an initial and confirmatory test. Both pilots were removed from flying duties pending the investigation. Authorities are examining flight data, cockpit activity, medical and drug-test records, and other operational factors to determine what contributed to the sudden altitude drop. The incident has raised fresh concerns over pilot fitness, fatigue management and strict compliance with aviation safety regulations. The final findings of the investigation are expected to establish whether the pilot’s reported sleep, medication or positive drug test had any connection with the in-flight incident.
