Divya Delhi : In a significant move aimed at tackling air pollution and promoting sustainable transportation, the Delhi government is planning to prohibit the registration of new petrol-powered two-wheelers from 2028. The proposal is part of the city’s broader clean mobility strategy, which seeks to accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) and reduce harmful vehicular emissions. If implemented, the policy will encourage residents to shift towards electric scooters and motorcycles by expanding EV infrastructure, including charging stations and financial incentives. Existing petrol two-wheelers are not expected to face an immediate ban, with the focus remaining on restricting new registrations after the proposed deadline. The move carries high stakes, as two-wheelers account for a significant share of Delhi’s registered vehicles and are widely used for daily commuting and commercial deliveries. While environmental experts have welcomed the proposal, industry representatives have raised concerns over affordability, charging infrastructure, and consumer readiness. The government is expected to hold consultations with stakeholders before finalising the policy.
