AAP to write to RS Chairman demanding disqualification of MPs who crossed over to BJP

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) announced it will write to Rajya Sabha Chairman C. P. Radhakrishnan seeking disqualification of seven MPs who recently crossed over to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).AAP leaders termed the move “unconstitutional and illegal,” arguing that the anti-defection provisions under the Tenth Schedule do not permit such splits. Party leader Sanjay Singh said a formal complaint will be submitted demanding termination of the MPs’ membership in the Upper House. The seven MPs involved include Raghav Chadha, Sandeep Pathak, Swati Maliwal, Harbhajan Singh, Ashok Mittal, Rajinder Gupta and Vikramjit Sahney. AAP insists their defection violates parliamentary rules despite claims by the breakaway group that they meet the two-thirds requirement for a “merger,” which is protected under existing law.Meanwhile, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has sought a meeting with President Droupadi Murmu to demand action, including a controversial “recall” of the MPs—though the Constitution does not provide such a provision. Most legal experts believe the merger clause may shield the MPs from disqualification. However, AAP continues to challenge the move, highlighting internal tensions and organisational challenges within the party.
